| In
the time frame 1970-1980 a new aeronautical culture
has arisen and has involved layers of people who were
not professionally working in this specific sector.
For a lot of individuals a new expectation materialized:
to be able to fly small planes in a simple but safe
manner. In Italy the governing law of this sector finds
its ground in State law number 106 issued in 1985 which
has resulted in the development of a completely new
aviation sector targeted at the manufacturing of light
aircraft for pleasure and sports (ULM). With the years
this sector has reached unexpected levels of production
both in terms of sheer numbers and in the level of technological
sophistication and solutions. In the last 10 years only
in Italy almost 6000 new aircraft were registered. In
comparison general aviation recorded only 750 new entries.
The possibility to manufacture light aircraft without
the need to utilize certified aeronautical components,

of which would not be in line with the target market,
has stimulated the evolution of technological solutions
specifically targeted at this segment and which satisfy
3 main prerequisites:
- higher level of safety also for non professionals;
- lower cost structure
- weight savings;
Within this context the solutions
which have evolved from a prototype phase into a full
production one have resulted in very competitive products
even with regards to both general and commercial aviation.
In particular avionics has benefited of all the innovations
directly derived from the consumer market without all
the hassles linked to heavy specific certification procedures
required by aviation authorities.
